The Art of Restoration and Conservation

Margery Johnson, owner of Johnson Art Service in Hickory, will discuss the process she used to restore two paintings for the Museum. She will explain her capabilities as a conservationist and offer condition assessments of paintings (not under glass) brought in by attendees. Join Margery for a unique opportunity in learning to care for your art treasures.

The Art of Making Oil Paint with Matthew Wood
6:30 - 7:30 PM, Coe Gallery (Refreshments at 6 PM)

Come early and enjoy looking at some of the Museum’s Hudson River School era masterpieces. Then join classical painter Matthew Good as he demonstrates a process painters used 150 years ago to make oil paint. Matthew has worked and traveled to Italy with Ben Long developing his skills as a portrait painter. He actually makes his own paint and is eager to share his knowledge.

The Life and Art of Anna Hyatt Huntington
3 - 4 PM, Coe Gallery

Join Robin Salmon, Vice President for Collections and Curator of Sculpture at Brookgreen Gardens as she shares her expertise on Huntington’s life and sculpture. Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington founded Brookgreen Gardens in 1931 on Pawleys Island, SC to preserve the native flora and fauna and display the most significant collection of American sculpture in an outdoor setting. HMA is proud to own four sculptures by the world-renowned sculptor, which will be on exhibit.

Join HMA patrons and art collectors, Isaac and Sonia Luski, for a tour of the Foundation for the Carolinas’ new facility. The Luskis donated most of their art glass collection to this institution.
